Dr. Santosh Mehrotra is Visiting Professor at the Centre for Development Studies, University of Bath, UK and at the Higher School of Economics Moscow. He was Professor of Economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University until 2020. He holds a Master’s in Economics from The New School for Social Research, New York, and a PhD from Cambridge University. He has extensive experience across public policy, academia and international development. He served as Director General of the Institute of Applied Manpower Research and held key roles at the Planning Commission. He was also associated with UNICEF and UNDP for 15 years, including as Chief Economist for the UNDP Human Development Report. A human development economist, his research spans labour, informal sector, industry, trade, health and education. His recent books include Reviving Jobs: An Agenda for Growth (2025), India Out of Work and Planning in the 20th Century and Beyond.
